IROC All-Star Racing Series to Return in 2024

On Monday, venture entrepreneur Rob Kauffman, a former NASCAR Cup team owner, and NASCAR Hall of Fame member Ray Evernham announced the launch of IROC Holdings LLC, a joint venture, and the acquisition of the rights to the former IROC name.

Held yearly from 1973 through 2006, the International Race of Champions (IROC) was a series of races. IROC pitted well-prepared cars driven by racing legends from NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula One, and other series against one another at venues throughout the US.

Mark Donahue became victorious in the first-ever IROC championship in 1973–1974. Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt, Mario Andretti, Al Unser Jr., Bobby Unser, A.J. Foyt, and Dale Earnhardt are among the previous winners of the series.

After gaining experience as a technician in the IROC, Evernham joined NASCAR and won three titles alongside Jeff Gordon. He created Superstar Racing Experience, often considered a spiritual successor to the original IROC, and maintains vintage IROC vehicles in his spare time. According to Evernham's announcement in 2022, he was no longer involved with SRX.

To what extent can the updated IROC take on SRX? This is an open question.

While IROC Holdings did mention that it plans to host a racing event this year with vintage IROC vehicles in their announcement news release, the company was mum on details like when and where the event will take place. According to auto racing reports, prospects are also being considered by the Mooresville, North Carolina-based corporation.
