FIA to Make Changes to Qatar Grand Prix after Drivers’ Complaints

The FIA, Formula One’s governing body, will make some changes to promote drivers’ safety during the Qatar Grand Prix. It came after drivers reported getting dizzy and vomiting due to the heat. According to bookie per head reports, temperatures in the cockpit reached around 50 degrees Celsius. Also, track temperatures did not drop below 36 degrees Celsius.

Esteban Ocon of Alpine remarked that the track conditions were "like a sauna," and rookie driver Logan Sargeant of Williams had to pull out of the race on Lap 41 due to severe dehydration, according to the team. The team claimed that the heat had made his "flu-like symptoms" much worse.

After the race, Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll said he had been passing out in the car. Also, he and Williams driver Alex Albon had difficulty getting out of their vehicles.

Qatar Grand Prix Too Hot for Drivers

Director of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association and Mercedes driver Russell said the race was the most physically demanding of his career. On Monday, the FIA released a statement saying it has begun an investigation into the incident to provide suggestions for similar circumstances in the future.

The announcement noted that the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix will be held on December 1, when temperatures would be more comfortable.

However, the FIA stated that it intended to take "material action today" to avoid a repeat of the incident.

The Grand Prix on Sunday was the second Formula One event hosted in Qatar, and the first under a 10-year arrangement that would bring the sport to Lusail annually.
