Legendary poker player Phil Ivey had a sluggish start and a tough first day at the $1,000,000 buy-in World Poker Tour (WPT) Big One for One Drop, eventually busting out before the session ended.
Out of seventeen entrants, the WPT ambassador and Poker Hall of Famer was one of three who failed to secure a spot in the seven-figure event.
Ivey got off to a sluggish start, losing a significant portion of his 1,000,000-chip stack early on in the game. Throughout the day, he fought his way up to Level 8, the night's last level, where he and Dan Smith got into a giant pot.
Day 1 of the WPT Event: Phil Ivey's Bust
After an under-the-gun check, Smith bet 80,000 with Q♦ J♦ on a flop of A ♦ 10 2♠. Ivey, holding A♥ JX, called. Following the K♠ on the turn, the action shifted back to Smith, who placed a wager of 180,000 using the straight he had just hit. His wager was called for the second time in a row.
Before sending it to the high-stakes crusher, Ivey double-checked the river, a meaningless 7♣. Ivey was eliminated from the tournament moments before the session ended because he elected to call after spending four-time extension chips in response to Smith's push for 425,000 effective. David Einhorn and Talal Shakerchi were among the day 1 busts in this freezeout tournament.
Ivey told poker news reporters before the $1 million buy-in tournament that he was "coming in cold" since he hasn't played poker recently.
