Philippines Joins Latvia and Georgia in 2024 FIBA Olympics Qualifiers

Group A for the 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament was drawn at the headquarters of the international governing basketball organization in Mies, Switzerland. GILAS Pilipinas will face tough competition from Latvia (ranked eighth) and Georgia (world No. 23).

Group B consists of Montenegro, Brazil, and Cameroon.

According to Olympics news reports, Riga, Latvia will host the 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualification Tournament from July 2-7. The 38th-ranked Philippines will face off against Georgia and Latvia in Group A, while Brazil, Cameroon, and Montenegro will square off in Group B's round-robin.

Basketball World Cup Qualifying for 2024

The two best teams from each group will meet in the crossover semifinals. In Riga, the one Olympic slot will be decided when the top teams from each group meet the second-place teams from the opposite group in a semifinal match.

Because of their strong performance in the 2023 FIBA World Cup in Manila, where they placed fifth despite not having Kristaps Porzingis, a star player for the Boston Celtics, Latvia is an obvious favorite.

Tim Cone was only there for the 19th Asian Games, when the Philippines won gold in Hangzhou, China, and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has yet to name a new coach for the Gilas squad.
