Kentucky Derby Winner Mystik Dan to Join in Preakness Stakes

Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan will compete in the 149th edition of the Preakness Stakes next week. His trainer, Kenny McPeek, announced the news a week after rumors that the horse might not join the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Following Mystik Dan's narrow victory in the Kentucky Derby Sunday morning, the alarm went off because he didn't eat much of his meal and had trouble sleeping. Nevertheless, his hunger has returned, and he has been sprinting superbly ever since. According to Gambling Interaction sources, trainers can tell if their horse is healthy by looking at its reaction to eating, among other indicators.

There is so much fuss for so little here.

Per McPeek's instructions, the three-year-old horse recovered well after galloping at Churchill Downs on Saturday morning by exercise rider and former jockey Robby Albarado. The results of McPeek's decision to scope the horse—a procedure that involves inserting a tube into the horse's nostril and pushing it down—to check for respiratory problems were evident. According to Horse Racing Nation, McPeek arranged everything to send the horse to Baltimore.

Mystik Dan, who ran a close second at Churchill Downs before losing the lead, may be better suited to the longer distance of the Preakness. Although the Preakness is approximately 110 yards shorter at 1 3/16 miles, the Kentucky Derby is 1 ½ miles long.

On Monday, the selection for the Preakness Stakes will take place. Mystik Dan may have won the Kentucky Derby, but he isn't even near the top of the betting odds. Bob Baffert's Muth, who won the Arkansas Derby but couldn't compete in the Derby due to eligibility issues, is the clear favorite. Third place in the Arkansas Derby went to Mystik Dan.

Preakness Stakes Odds

Mystik Dan shocked everyone in the 2024 Kentucky Derby by winning in a nail-biting photo finish, just avoiding defeat. The victory has put Mystik Dan in prime position to win the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the renowned Triple Crown, which is coming soon.

May 18th marks the return to Baltimore's famed Pimlico Race Course for the long-standing Preakness Stakes. The draw will take place on May 13, signaling the beginning of an important phase in preparing for the title defense.

Looking back on last year's Preakness Stakes, jockey John Velazquez—who also rode Fierceness in the 2024 Kentucky Derby—had a remarkable triumph aboard National Treasure. The fact that National Treasure won the Preakness Stakes for the first time despite being 3-1 odds shows how unpredictable the race can be.

As the 2024 Preakness Stakes approaches, there is growing excitement. Here are the preliminary race odds to add to the anticipation of this esteemed event.

  • Muth – 10-11
  • Mystik Dan – 3-1
  • Tuscan Gold – 5-1
  • Imagination – 5-1
  • Just Steel – 10-1
  • Seize the Gray – 10-1
  • Copper Tax – 16-1
  • Uncle Heavy – 20-1
  • Informed Patriot – 20-1
  • Mugatu – 33-1
